PARADOX MOTHERHOOD EXHIBITION

Tour by curator, Andrea Lewis, who has been working on this brilliant exhibition for many months. For this special tour, she will be joined by a few of the exhibiting artists, including Leah Hawker and Claudette Schreuders (last image below).

Motherhood: Paradox and Duality, has work by over 70 artists, exploring different aspects to mothering. All from Southern Africa, works are from different periods and a wide range of media – painting and photography to broom heads and fabric. Keiskamma Art Project altarpiece to a David Goldblatt portrait – the art is from the permanent collection and loans.

We see how motherhood is not a fixed ideal, but a fluid, dynamic and deeply human experience. South Africa’s history and current situation make this exhibition relevant, powerful and moving. It covers topics ranging from colonial legacies, the HIV crisis, and persistent gender inequality to breast feeding in public and shifting roles of parents.

R400 pre-pay, R300 paying pre 26 July R300 per person.

When you arrive there is an Iziko South African National Gallery entry fee of R50 if you are not a Friend of the Gallery, tour guide etc but there are discounts for seniors and students.
