ONE AND THE MINUTE EXHIBITION

September 22, 2025 - November 01, 2025 JAVET-UP - First Floor Gallery

In extension of the Living School at Javett-UP, third-year Fine Arts students from the University of Pretoria acquired hands-on experience with curatorial practice in an experiential, practice-based curatorial project from May to August 2025. Grounded in Grant Kester’s Contemporary Collaborative Art in a Global Context (2011), the project explored the ethical and conceptual challenges of individuality and collectivity within museum-based art collections, fostering a collaborative approach to learning and knowledge exchange.

With guidance from Dr. Adéle Adendorff and Interim Curatorial Director Storm Janse van Rensburg, the art centre was transformed into an interactive educational environment through lectures, discussions, walkabouts, and insights into the curatorial process behind One and the Many. Students were encouraged to depart from conventional curatorial models centred on aesthetic autonomy, single authorship, and market orientation to create miniature exhibition displays of the Javett-UP exhibition space, aligning a personal theme with the broader narrative of One and the Many. Over the course of five weeks, five student groups will exhibit their miniature exhibitions, associating their works with broader issues in art, politics, and society while maintaining an ongoing conversation with One and the Many.
