Dimpho Phuthi

Dimpho Phuthi is a South Africa artist working with a number of overlapping techniques and subject material.

Phuthi’s practice is an amalgamation of an exploration of the human condition; It specifically transverses the subjects of grief, neurosis, the thin line between love and hate, and the body.

With a background in choir, sound work and performance have become a centre piece to her work, and more adequately through photography.

Through the use of photography she works to reach a catharsis in digesting the smarting qualities of human life, and in particular, her own life.

She works a lot with self portraiture as a gateway for viewers to see themselves. In doing so, she aims to sit viewers in front of their own traumas in a way that holds them gently into the night.

“I aim to see the viewer, and let them see themselves in a way that is not traumatising, but coaxing of both the imagined and realised pains of our pasts and present.

I try to hold your hand through it as I have held myself-” Dimpho Phuthi.
