Candice Myataza

Candice Myataza is a visual artist based in Cape Town, South Africa.

Drawing inspiration from her own life experiences and literature, she works to explore the realms of spirituality, mental health, and social constructions alongside identity and the natural environment in relation to the African diaspora and the Western culture.

Growing up in a black community as a mixed race(black mother, white father), she has experienced a fair share of racism which left her with a fragmented sense of racial belonging.

In an attempt to make sense of it all, she has developed a unique technique, often depicting a human outline painted in with different shades of brown blocks through the use of acrylics on canvas.

This expression attempts to show the inherent human aspect we all share despite our many fragmented differences.

Her indigenous black culture upbringing has left her with many questions upon coming into contact with contradictory information from the western culture.

Having to integrate into this new culture, she finds herself in a state of limbo. Her work explores these two worlds and tries to find common ground as to create a sense of harmony.

At the very core, she invites the audience to think carefully about their own individual perceptions and the influence that these can have on the world
